Dupont And Mendel Search For Genes To Boost Corn Water Use Efficiency

Collaboration will concentrate on gene leads to be put into Pioneer Corn hybrids in the future.

DuPont Pioneer and Mendel Biotechnology, Inc., are collaborating to commercialize new gene leads to boost water use efficiency in Pioneer brand corn hybrids.

"Greater efficiency in water use and photosynthesis can enhance farmer profitability and productivity, while improving sustainability of agriculture worldwide," says Mike Lassner , Dupont Pioneer's vice president for biotechnology.

At Mendel, Neal Gutterson, CEO, says, "We are leveraging 15 years of focused research in plant gene regulatory networks, taking advantage of genomics and sequencing revolutions to create better and more sustainable crop solutions."

Water use efficiency in corn is the subject of a new collaboration between DuPont Pioneer and Mendel Biotechnology, Inc. The agreement calls for the two firms to search for gene leads that will eventually be put into Pioneer brand corn products.

High water use efficiency genes identified in that 15-year search are now being examined for use in DuPont Pioneer's corn hybrids.
