Learn About SCN at Upcoming Field Days

Events will be held at four Nebraska farms.

Not many pests garner their own field days. Soybean cyst nematodes are the exception as once again the Nebraska Soybean Board and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension will sponsor four Soybean Cyst Nematode Management Field Days this summer.

They will be Aug. 11 near Plainview, Aug. 24, near Louisville, Aug. 31, near Seward, and Sept. 1, near Auburn.

According to John Wilson, Extension educator in Burt County who focuses SCN, the pest costs Nebraska farmers more than $25 million in lost soybean yields. "If you have SCN on your farm and are not managing it, you contributed to that loss," he says.

At each site, the following four topics will be covered. Wilson says farmers will be able to see SCN-resistant and susceptible soybean varieties, examine cysts on infested soybean plant roots, learn how to identify and manage SCN infestation, receive a kit for one free SCN analysis (a $20 value), and get answers to your questions about SCN.

Here are specific directions to each field day:

Aug. 11, Ron Norris farm, 1 miles west of Plainview on Hwy. 20, 4 miles south on 535TH Ave., and ¾ mile west on 860TH Rd.

Aug. 24, Dozier Ag Research, 2 miles north of Louisville on Hwy. 50, turn west on Cornish Road.

Aug. 31, Don Peterson farm, 2 miles south of Seward on Hwy 15, 1.7 miles east on Fletcher Road.

Sept. 1, Nate Johnson farm, 7-1/2 miles west of Auburn on Hwy. 136.
