Pheasants Forever Schedules Burn Schools Across Nebraska

Prescribed fires help regenerate drought and control red cedars.

Prescribed burning of pastures has proven over the years to help regenerate grass stands. Those burns also are a good tool in control of Eastern Red Cedar infestations of pastures and rangelands across Nebraska.

The Nebraska chapter of Pheasants Forever has been instrumental in forming 10 local prescribed burn associations, says Pete Berthelsen, director of habitat partnerships for Pheasants Forever. Those associations have delivered more than 27,000 acre of prescribed fire, he adds.

"In the last six years, Pheasants Forever staff has conducted 71 prescribed burn workshops across Nebraska for 1,519 attendees," Berthelsen says. "We hope to continue this successful outreach."

They will do just that with a series of prescribed burn workshops this winter. The schedule is:

  • Jan. 21, 9 a.m., Upper White Natural Resources District, Chadron.
  • Jan. 22, 9 a.m., UNL Extension office, Hall County, Grand Island.
  • Jan. 23, 9 a.m., Mid-Plains Community College North Campus, North Platte.
  • Jan. 23, 9 a.m., UNL Extension office, Lancaster County, Lincoln.
  • Jan. 30, 9 a.m., South Platte Natural Resources District, Sidney.
  • Feb. 12, 9 a.m., Red Cloud Community Center, Red Cloud.
  • March 5, noon, Sherman Reservoir Wildlife Management Area, Loup City.
  • March 19, 9 a.m., Wayne State College, Wayne.

The Red Clouds and Loup City workshops are advanced prescribed burn training, while the others are basic training.
