WTO Meetings Show Promise

Doha Round talks continue forward.

Last week consultations among various WTO member nations and their delegations were deemed promising toward making a breakthrough in agricultural negotiations. New Zealand Ambassador Crawford Falconer, the chair for Doha agricultural talks, is allowing the meetings to continue this week.

"I'm working on the assumption that you want that process to continue and see it as sole prospect for achieving the outcome that you want," Falconer says. "That's the necessary condition, provided that it works for getting to the outcome we all seek."

According to Falconer multi-lateral talks should resume before the end of the month to allow negotiations to continue on a revised-draft framework of a final deal. However he says looking at the calendar it will have to wait until after Easter.
